Ft Tryon Park

In New York City everyone wants to be in Central Park, with its beautiful, big lake, castle, the whole nine. But further north in Washington Heights is an equally impressive park that should be on your list of must-see places in the city.

Ft Tryon Park is most famous for housing The Cloisters, a branch of the Metropolitan Museum of Art that houses their collection of medieval art. A stunning collection is housed there and is well worth your time, especially to see the world famous Unicorn Tapestries they have on permanent display. One of the loveliest parts of the museum is the garden made entirely out of plants that are featured within the tapestries. Surrounded by medieval art, castle walls, and the scent of the flowers in the garden you’ll be taken on a trip through time back to pre-renaissance Europe.

In addition to the museum Ft Tryon Park is home to a breathtaking heather garden, the annual medieval festival held there every fall, and a magnificent view of the Ft Washington Bridge. You can wander the hills of the park and take in a lovely view of the river just a few short steps from the 1 train.
