Župančičeva ulica 1, Ljubljana

History of performances:

Opera building was built already in 1892. During this time, it was the scene of drama and opera, as well as of the German performances. During the First World War there were no performances, but already in 1918 the theatre consortium revived the scene and they again began with the implementation of drama and opera performances, in addition, they also started Ballet Theatre.
In that time, they implemented mainly French and Italian operas. Focus was also placed on Slavic and Slovenian operatic works.

Today:

Today, the central Slovenian musical theatre is featuring an extensive repertoire of opera, ballet and concert works of contemporary and classical musical and theatrical creativity in the building and on tours at home and abroad.

About the building and architecture:

The building was built in between 1890 and 1892 in neo-Renaissance style. In the year 1998, they began with the renovation, which included the new modern extension of the building. With this renovation, the building area was increased from 3.500 to 10.500 square metres. Due to numerous complications in the construction, the opening ceremony was moved to the year 2011.
In the façade niches, there are two statues, which are representing allegories of tragedy and comedy. The external appearance of the building is richly decorated with Ionic pillars. The statues are the work of local artists Alojzij Gangl and all other decorations were made by foreign artists.
